Demineralised Water

Demineralised Water is also known as Demineralized Water, De-mineralised Water, De-mineralized Water and Demin Water. Demineralised Water is a type of very pure water in which the ions have been neutralised. This is performed by a physical process known as Demineralisation.

The process of Demineralisation consists of water being passed through a series of resin beds containing ion exchange resins, which filter out the mineral deposits present in water. Ion exchange resins look a little like grainy sand and when water passes over them, mineral ions are removed. There are two types of ions; cations and anions. Cations can be removed from such materials as Calcium, Copper, Iron and Sodium, and anions can be removed from such materials as Bromide and Chloride.

Once the water has passed over the resin beds and the cations and anions have been removed, this produces water of a very high purity which is known as Demineralised Water. It is possible to further pass Demineralised Water over the resin beds once again. This produces water of an even higher quality known as Double Demineralised Water or Double Deionised Water.

Demineralised Water is used in a wide range of applications. Due to the purity of Demineralised Water, it is often used in the manufacture of high purity chemicals and in Research and Development departments in industry. Due to the purity of Demineralised Water, chemical experiments and research are more accurate because there are no trace elements present in Demineralised Water which could potentially affect results. Schools and Universities also have requirements for Demineralised Water, as do other learning institutions.

However, there are a number of alternative types of high quality water and Demineralisation is just one method of producing very pure water. Other methods include Reverse Osmosis, Distillation, Ultraviolet Oxidation and Carbon Filtration. These other processes and treatments produce various types of water, each of which is best suitable to a range of specific applications.
